About Parcul Herăstrău
The city's largest park unfolds along the shores of Lake Herăstrău, one of the string of lakes formed by the Colentina river as it crosses northern Bucharest. Its official name honours King Mihai I, but locals almost always just call it Herăstrău. Laid out in the mid-1930s on what had been marshy ground, it is the kind of green space an entire city breathes through: runners at dawn, families with strollers in the afternoon, boats on the water towards dusk. At well over 100 hectares once the lake is counted in, it is large enough to fill an entire day without ever feeling repetitive, and its mix of zones — from open banks to clumps of woodland — gives it the character of a truly metropolitan park.
The long lakeside promenades are the main draw. You can walk or cycle a full loop, stop at one of the jetties for a boat trip or a pedal-boat, or simply spread out on the grass. Inside the park you will also find the National Village Museum, an open-air collection of traditional homesteads gathered from every region of the country, and a quiet Japanese Garden with a small pond and arched bridges. Along the Charles de Gaulle Square side there are terraces and restaurants open year-round, and footbridges lead out to the islands in the middle of the lake, where the mood turns calmer and more secluded. There is also an alley lined with the busts of notable figures, as well as sprawling playgrounds for children.
Good to know
- The most convenient entrance is from Charles de Gaulle Square; the closest metro stop is Aviatorilor, a short walk away.
- The park is vast — pick one end and explore around it rather than trying to see everything at once.
- For boat-trip and terrace hours, check official sources, as these vary by season.
- Come in the morning or towards evening at weekends if you want to avoid the midday crowds.

Spring, when the trees blossom, and autumn, when the lake mirrors the colours, are when the park looks its best. In summer the banks fill with people drawn to the cool air off the water, while in winter, when the lake partly freezes over, the scene takes on a particular stillness. Whatever the season, this is where Bucharest slows down — and perhaps where you can read most clearly the relaxed way the city spends its free time. For many residents, Herăstrău is not just a park but the place of family memories, of first boat rides and of lazy Sunday afternoons spent on the water's edge.
