About Arcul de Triumf

The Arc de Triomphe of Bucharest dominates Șoseaua Kiseleff in the north of the city, an unmissable landmark. Its present stone form dates from 1936 and was raised to commemorate Romania's victory and its soldiers in the First World War; an earlier, temporary arch had already marked the spot after 1878 and after the Great War. Today's monument, designed by the architect Petre Antonescu, replaced those temporary structures with a lasting one to match its symbolism, and it has become one of the most recognisable landmarks of the capital.

The monument deliberately echoes Europe's triumphal arches, yet has its own identity, with bas-reliefs, inscriptions and sculptures by Romanian artists. Inside, a staircase climbs to a panoramic terrace, open to the public on certain days, with a wide view over Kiseleff and the surrounding rooftops. At its base, traffic circles a broad roundabout, so approaching on foot takes a little care. Seen up close, the monument reveals carved details that go unnoticed from a distance — faces, inscriptions and ornaments that tell, in stone, the story of a country that emerged victorious from war.

Good to know

  • Access to the panoramic terrace is not permanent — check the official website to see whether it is open on the day of your visit.
  • It lies on the natural route towards Herăstrău Park and the Kiseleff museums.
  • Approaching on foot calls for care with the traffic, as the arch sits in the middle of a busy roundabout.
  • It is impressive even seen only from outside, especially in the evening when it is lit.
  • The closest metro station is Aviatorilor.

The arch is also where the military parade passes on National Day, 1 December — a detail that explains its solemn presence in the city's landscape. For Bucharest residents it is more than a monument: it is a navigation point, a meeting spot and a symbol of historical continuity at the heart of one of the city's most elegant boulevards. Passed daily by thousands of cars, it nonetheless remains a place that asks for a moment of attention each time you see it rising above Șoseaua Kiseleff.
