About Parcul "Carol I"
Parcul Carol I is, without exaggeration, one of the finest historic parks in Bucharest — laid out in 1906 to the designs of the French landscape architect Édouard Redont, for the Romanian General Exhibition that marked four decades of King Carol I's reign. Unlike the neighbourhood parks, everything here is conceived as a composition: terraces, monumental stairways, fountains and a central axis that climbs toward the top of the hill. It was one of the first parks in Romania designed from scratch on modern landscape principles, and the symmetry and care for detail are felt at every step.
Inside are several first-rank landmarks: the Mausoleum on the heights (the former Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, later moved here), the Zodiac Fountain with its colourful mosaic, the cascade-fed Grotto and the statues of the Giants, two male figures supporting an entrance. On the entrance side, the Palace of Arts houses the Dimitrie Leonida Technical Museum. It is a park made for walking slowly, with your eyes turned upward, where each level reveals a new vista. Paths, steps and terraces follow one another so that the walk takes on an almost ceremonial rhythm, very different from that of an ordinary neighbourhood park.
Good to know
- The most convenient entrance is from Bulevardul Mărășești; the Tineretului metro station is a few minutes away on foot.
- Climb to the Mausoleum for the best panorama of the park and of southern Bucharest.
- It is a park of slopes and stairs — comfortable shoes help.
- Combine the visit with other nearby sights — the technical museum is right inside the park.
- Come at sunset, when the light falls beautifully across the terraces and the park's central axis.
With a 4.6 rating and almost 19,000 reviews, Carol I is everything the block parks are not: symmetrical, monumental and steeped in history, yet never once cold. It is a place where a walk becomes, almost without your noticing, a lesson in history and in landscape architecture. For anyone wanting to understand what the urban ambition of early-20th-century Romania looked like, Carol I park is one of the most eloquent testimonies still standing.
