Rahova is one of the Bucharest neighbourhoods with the longest memory. It lies in the south-west of the city, in Sector 5, and takes its name from the Romanian army's victory at Rahova on 9 November 1877. In the 18th century the area formed the Calicilor mahala, where the city's poor lived; over the following decades it became one of the capital's industrial arteries. Today it is an honest mix of old houses, inner courtyards and communist-era blocks — a quarter of working people, not a tourist shopfront. Its proximity to the centre means change is slowly reaching it, but it has kept much of its older texture.
The vibe
Rahova doesn't sell itself prettily, and it doesn't need to. It's a living neighbourhood with corner shops, markets and a settled population attached to the place. From the 19th century, Calea Rahovei was an important industrial street — its great landmark is the Bragadiru complex, where the merchant Dumitru Marinescu Bragadiru built a major brewery and, between 1905 and 1911, the lavish Bragadiru Palace with its ballroom; nationalised in 1948, the brewery became the Rahova beer factory. Smaller works making chocolate, soap and rubber once stood nearby, and traces of that history still show in the facades and old halls. It's good for a slow walk if you want to understand how the city grew beyond its restored centre.
What to see
The neighbourhood's green heart is Parcul Sebastian, laid out in the 1980s on land left empty beside the former Vulcan factory and recently refurbished: wide paths, playgrounds and sports courts with free access. Towards the centre, the old Filaret–Rahova industrial zone and the halls along Calea Rahovei are worth a detour for anyone keen on industrial architecture — the restored Bragadiru Palace today hosts events, while other spaces are still being converted, so the exact visiting hours are best checked in advance. For a meal, see the restaurants in the area.
Getting there
Rahova is close to the centre and well served by surface lines; for tickets and routes use the public transport guide, and for links to the metro network check the nearest stations, since the quarter itself has no metro stop of its own. For the bigger picture, browse the neighbourhoods page.
