About Palatul Parlamentului

The Palace of Parliament is the building that defines Bucharest's skyline by sheer size. Raised in the 1980s, at the height of the Ceaușescu regime under the name "House of the People", it is one of the largest administrative buildings in the world — a colossus of marble, crystal and wood, visible from afar and impossible to ignore. With hundreds of thousands of square metres laid out across dozens of levels, some of them underground, its scale defies any point of comparison in the city and remains, for many visitors, the first thing about Bucharest that astonishes them.

Its construction came at an enormous cost: an entire historic district, churches, monasteries and thousands of homes were demolished to make room for the building and the great boulevard leading to it. The materials — marble, precious wood, vast chandeliers — came almost entirely from within Romania, which turned the building site into a national effort that deeply marked both the economy and the city. Today it houses the Romanian Parliament, and part of the interior can be visited on a guided tour (see the Museum of the Palace of Parliament). Even from outside, seen from Bulevardul Unirii, its monumentalism says everything about the era's ambitions and abuses.

Good to know

  • Interior visits are by guided tour only, usually requiring a booking and an ID document — check the official website.
  • The best exterior view is from Bulevardul Unirii, looking from Unirii Square.
  • The tour covers only a fraction of the building — the rest remains in institutional use.
  • Book ahead, especially in the tourist season, as tour places are limited.
  • The closest metro station is Izvor.

It is the landmark you see first and remember last — the reference point from which any exploration of the city takes on scale. No other sight speaks more directly to Bucharest's recent, contradictory history than this colossus raised at the price of demolishing part of the city. It is impossible to look at without mixed feelings: impressive in its size and craftsmanship, yet inseparable from the human and urban drama from which it was born.
