About Cimitirul Bellu

Bellu Cemetery is the most important cemetery in Romania and, at the same time, a genuine open-air museum. Established in the mid-19th century, in 1858, on land donated by Baron Barbu Bellu, it became, over more than a century and a half, the resting place of most of Romania's great figures — writers, artists, scientists, politicians, musicians. Across nearly 28 hectares it preserves hundreds of funerary monuments of great artistic value, signed by some of the country's most important sculptors.

For the visitor, Bellu is a lesson in both history and funerary art. On the Writers' Alley lie the graves of Mihai Eminescu, Ion Luca Caragiale, George Coșbuc and many others; sculptures by leading artists such as Ion Georgescu and Frederic Storck turn some tombs into genuine works of art. The chapel, in Neo-Gothic style and inspired by Western models, crowns the ensemble. It is a place for a slow, reflective walk, not a quick tick-off, where every alley reveals a new story.

Good to know

  • It stands on Calea Șerban Vodă, in the south of the city, in the Berceni area; check the nearest metro station and the visiting hours.
  • Visit it with the respect due to an active cemetery — speak quietly, keep to the paths and do not disturb any ceremonies in progress.
  • Look for the Writers' Alley and the graves of the great figures; a map at the entrance helps enormously, as the grounds are vast and labyrinthine.

With a 4.5 rating, Bellu is not a morbid destination but a deeply cultural one — a place where the history of Romania can be read on gravestones. An unexpectedly rich stop among the city's sights, especially for those interested in literature and art.
