Berceni

Berceni is the textbook Bucharest of tower-block districts: large, dense, in Sector 4, home to tens of thousands of people. It's not a tourist destination and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise — it's a place to live, not to visit. But that's exactly why it's useful to understand if you want to see what the city's everyday life really looks like, away from the restored centre and the photogenic Old Town.

The vibe

Blocks upon blocks, ground-floor shops, neighbourhood markets, people hurrying to the metro in the morning. It's a working-class district, practical and unvarnished, with an ordinary energy that has its own honest charm. The further south you go, the closer you get to the city limit, where the blocks thin out and newer housing has gone up in recent years. There are no tourists here — and that's precisely the point: this is Bucharest with its sleeves rolled up.

What's nearby

Berceni itself has no sights, but Tineretului Park, one of the city's largest and most pleasant parks, is within reach to the north — a lake, paths, room to breathe and one of the better-loved green spaces in the south of the city. It's the best reason to stop along this direction, especially on a weekend. For a meal, the restaurants are neighbourhood spots rather than guidebook material, the kind of places locals actually use.

Getting there

The big plus is the metro: Berceni is the southern end of the M2 line, the north-south backbone crossing the whole city, so you reach it directly and effortlessly from the centre — a real advantage for such a populous area.
