Casa Memorială "Tudor Arghezi"

The "Tudor Arghezi" Memorial House — also known as Vila Mărțișor — is the house where one of the greatest Romanian poets of the 20th century lived from 1930 until his death in 1967. It stands on Strada Mărțișor, on Piscului Hill, in a quiet area of the southern city, surrounded by the orchard the poet himself tended and the trees he planted with his own hands. The name of the house, in fact, gave the title to one of Arghezi's best-known volumes, and the cycle of poems tied to this garden was written here.

Visiting the house is an intimate encounter with the writer's world: period furniture, the library of thousands of volumes, photographs, documents and manuscripts, all kept almost untouched, as if the poet had just stepped out into the garden. In an annexe there was even the printing workshop where Arghezi worked alongside his son, Baruțu, producing magazines and slim volumes of verse. In accordance with the poet's written wishes, the house became a museum in 1974, after the death of his wife. It is one of those places where literature stops being abstract and acquires walls, the smell of paper and the silence of a garden.
