About Muzeul Național al Țăranului Român

The National Museum of the Romanian Peasant is one of the city's most beloved museums, housed in an imposing Neo-Romanian building near Victoriei Square, raised in the early 20th century to the designs of architect Nicolae Ghika-Budești. It is no ordinary museum: instead of cold labels and sober cases, its poetic, atmospheric staging, conceived after 1990 by the painter and curator Horia Bernea, made it famous and earned it the title of European Museum of the Year in 1996. Bernea's vision broke completely with classic ethnographic display, turning humble peasant objects into genuine visual and spiritual compositions.

The collection gathers more than a hundred thousand pieces — textiles, folk costumes, icons on glass and wood, ceramics, tools and devotional objects from the Romanian village world, arranged in installations that tell stories of faith, labour and celebration. There is even a small 18th-century wooden church, brought from Transylvania and reassembled inside, which you can examine up close. On the ground floor, the museum shop is a destination in itself, full of authentic crafts brought straight from artisans across the country, while the well-known basement club, Taranul, has for years been a fixture of Bucharest's cultural and musical life, hosting film screenings and concerts.

Good to know

  • Some sections may be under renovation — check the official website for which exhibitions are open and for current opening hours.
  • It stands beside the Antipa Museum and close to Victoriei Square, easy to combine into a single day of museums.
  • The closest metro station is Piața Victoriei.

It is the museum that proves ethnography can be moving rather than merely instructive — one of the most personal and living sights in the city, where the village object becomes art.
