Unirii & Tineretului
Piața Unirii, the Palace of Parliament and the Unirii fountains, plus Tineretului and Carol parks: the city at monumental scale.
View this area on the map →About Unirii & Tineretului
Unirii and Tineretului is Bucharest at monumental scale. This is where Piața Unirii sits, one of the city's largest traffic hubs, the starting point of Bulevardul Unirii with its line of fountains, an axis carved out in the 1980s to culminate in the Palace of Parliament, one of the largest and heaviest administrative buildings in the world. Creating this civic centre meant demolishing a vast historic district, a wound the city still remembers, and the result is a deliberately overwhelming display of communist-era ambition.
Beyond the grandeur of the civic centre, the area also hides corners to catch your breath. Carol Park, older and more romantic, was laid out at the start of the twentieth century and descends in terraces toward an imposing mausoleum, while Tineretului Park offers wide paths, a lake and room to move for the surrounding neighbourhoods. It is a typically Bucharest contrast: grandiose concrete and generous greenery, side by side.
What to see
- The Palace of Parliament, an architectural colossus visited by appointment
- Bulevardul Unirii and its run of fountains, restored as a long water axis
- Carol Park, with its terraces, monuments and the Mausoleum
- Tineretului Park, for a walk and some quiet away from the traffic
The vibe
This is a Bucharest of broad perspectives and contrasts. Piața Unirii is always in motion, with traffic and crowds funneling between metro entrances, while the nearby parks offer calm just a few minutes' walk away. In summer, the boulevard fountains become a spectacle on the evenings with choreographed water shows. It is a good area for anyone wanting to grasp the scale and recent history of the city.
Getting there
Piața Unirii is the city's largest metro hub, the crossing of two mainlines and one of the busiest interchanges in the network; see the metro. Almost every public transport line passes through, which makes it a natural starting point for a day out. For visits and monuments see the attractions, and for a meal you have plenty of restaurants nearby.
