About Therme București

Therme București is an enormous thermal-water wellness complex on the edge of the city, near Otopeni Airport in the Balotești area. It blends indoor and outdoor pools, slides, saunas, palm trees and a vast greenhouse dome full of tropical vegetation — a place where you can soak in warm water even in the depths of winter. Opened in 2016, it is one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe, conceived from the outset as a destination in its own right rather than merely an indoor pool. The whole concept rests on the idea of a tropical escape lying just steps from the edge of the capital.

The complex is split into zones with distinct moods. One is laid out as a water park with slides, suited to families and groups; another, much calmer, is dedicated purely to relaxation, with thermal pools, jacuzzis and rest areas; and a sauna world gathers a wide range of baths and rituals. The water comes from geothermal springs lying thousands of metres below the surface, and the overall feel is tropical — steady warmth, lush planting and soft light beneath the domes. Thousands of palms and exotic plants grow right inside, which makes the sense of escaping the city feel complete. Beyond the water, the complex also includes lounging areas, terraces and food outlets, so you can easily stay for several hours.

Good to know

  • It is outside the city near Otopeni — easiest reached by car or transfer; it is not a walkable destination from the centre.
  • Bring a towel and flip-flops or rent them on site; the zones differ in access rules and age limits.
  • For opening hours, ticket types and any bookings, check the official website — these change seasonally.
  • The separate zones have their own access rules, so it is worth checking them in advance to pick the right ticket.
  • It can get very busy at weekends and on holidays — a midweek visit is often more relaxed.

Therme works as a full-day escape from the city's pace: warm, humid and green, the exact opposite of a cold day spent walking between sights downtown. Because it sits so close to the airport, many travellers fit it in just before or after a flight, and for Bucharest residents it has become, especially in the cold months, a kind of mini tropical holiday just half an hour from home. It is the sort of place you step into for a few hours and leave feeling you have spent the day somewhere far further from the city than you really are.
