About Muzeul Municipiului București
The Bucharest Municipality Museum is housed in Suțu Palace, a 19th-century aristocratic residence right at the University crossroads, on Bulevardul I.C. Brătianu, built between 1833 and 1834 for the high steward Costache Suțu. The building itself, with its neo-Gothic façade, monumental entrance staircase, Venetian mirror and Viennese clock, is already half the experience: one of the few grand period houses in the centre you can actually visit inside, preserving the atmosphere of the salons of old.
The collection tells the story of the city, from archaeological finds and old maps to objects, costumes, weapons, photographs and testimonies of a Bucharest that has reinvented itself across the centuries, from the medieval market town to the interwar metropolis. It is the ideal place to grasp what life looked like in the so-called Little Paris and to see the successive layers that built today's city, its splendours and its demolitions alike.
Good to know
- The location is excellent: a few steps from Universitate metro station and the Old Town.
- Check the official website for opening hours and the frequently changing temporary exhibitions.
- Combine the visit with other central attractions for an afternoon devoted to urban history.
For anyone who wants to understand Bucharest not just as a backdrop but as a city with a biography, Suțu Palace is a natural and thoroughly charming starting point.
