About Foișorul de Foc
Foișorul de Foc (the Fire Watchtower) is one of the most recognisable towers in Bucharest — a red-brick watchtower about 42 metres tall, raised from 1890 to the designs of architect George Mandrea, then the city's chief architect, on the site of an older watchtower. It was not originally a museum but a firefighters' observation tower: from the top, watchmen scanned the city for smoke, and at the first sign of fire they rang the alarm bell. At the time it was built, it was the tallest building in the city and had also been conceived as a water tower, though the Grozăvești waterworks had no pumps powerful enough to fill it.
As the city grew and new buildings blocked its view, the tower lost its purpose as a lookout. Since 1963 it has housed the National Firefighters' Museum, dedicated to the history and traditions of Romania's firefighters — old pumps, horse-drawn water carts, equipment, uniforms and the story of a profession as seemingly ordinary as it is heroic in fact. Recently restored, the tower has also been brought up to seismic-safety standards, restoring its former lustre.
