About Ateneul Român

The Romanian Athenaeum is Bucharest's emblematic concert hall and the home of the "George Enescu" Philharmonic. Opened in 1888, with a neoclassical dome resting on columns and an elegant peristyle, it was built largely through public donations — the "Give a leu for the Athenaeum" campaign is the stuff of local legend. Designed by the French architect Albert Galleron, the building quickly became a symbol of the cultural ambition of a young capital that wanted to be taken seriously in Europe, and it has remained, for over a century, the heart of the city's musical life.

The interior is what astonishes most. The main hall is crowned by an enormous circular fresco, tens of metres long, that wraps the space with scenes from Romanian history, and the acoustics are reckoned among the country's finest. George Enescu conducted here, and this is where the prestigious "George Enescu" International Festival opens every two years, one of the most important classical-music events in this part of Europe. Even without a concert, the round foyer, with its marble columns, and the monumental staircase are worth seeing for their period elegance.

Good to know

  • The surest way to see the interior is to attend a Philharmonic concert — check the programme on the official website.
  • It stands in George Enescu Square, beside the National Museum of Art and a few steps from Calea Victoriei.
  • At certain times visits may be offered outside concert hours — check official sources.
  • During the "George Enescu" Festival, tickets sell out fast — book well ahead.
  • The closest metro station is Universitate.

The Athenaeum is not just a beautiful building but a living institution of Romanian musical life — the best place in the city for an evening of classical music. To hear a concert beneath its circular fresco, in a hall famed for its acoustics, is one of those Bucharest experiences that nothing else can replace. For many, it is also the building that best represents the Bucharest of old: Belle Époque elegance, cultural ambition and the idea that a city is built, too, through the beauty of its public spaces.
