About Vitan

Vitan is a district in Bucharest's south-east, more functional than picturesque, with apartment blocks, busy arteries and the Sun Plaza mall as its main commercial landmark. On its own it wouldn't make any tourist list — but it has a neighbour that changes the whole equation, and that neighbour is one of the most unusual things you can see anywhere in the city.

What to see

A short distance away lies Văcărești Nature Park, nicknamed Bucharest's "urban delta". It's a fascinating story: in 1986 work began on a communist-era reservoir here, and the old Văcărești Monastery was demolished to make way for it; after 1989 the project was abandoned. Over more than two decades of neglect, nature reclaimed the basin, ringed by a concrete dyke about 5.5 km long. In 2016 it was officially declared a nature park — roughly 183 hectares, the first protected natural area inside a Romanian city. Some 136 bird species have been recorded here — herons, egrets, cormorants, swans, coots, wild ducks — alongside foxes, otters and water snakes. It is a wild wetland of reeds, birds and a stillness hard to believe exists inside a city of nearly two million. It's the kind of place that stays with you.

The vibe

Pure contrast: on one side the mall and neighbourhood traffic, on the other a nature reserve untidy in the best way, where you walk on dirt paths and listen to frogs and birds. For Văcărești, wear practical shoes, bring water, and check the official access points and any guided-tour times before you set out, since the terrain is genuinely wild and parts can be muddy after rain.

Getting there

Vitan is linked to the centre by trams and buses; the nearest metro stops involve some walking too. See public transport for routes and the neighbourhoods page to place your visit. For a meal before or after the park, the restaurants around the mall are the easiest bet, since the reserve itself has no facilities inside.
