Drumul Taberei is an emblematic tower-block district of south-west Bucharest: large, dense, lived in by whole generations and tightly bound to the identity of the socialist-era city. Built up mainly in the 1960s and 1970s, it became a model neighbourhood of the period, with green courtyards between the blocks. It's not a tourist destination, but it's one of those neighbourhoods that means something to locals, with a spirit of its own that's hard to fake.
What to see
The heart of neighbourhood life is Drumul Taberei Park, also known as Moghioroș Park — a generous green space with paths, a lake and places to relax, packed with people at weekends. It's exactly the kind of local park that shows how the city unwinds away from the tourist zones: grandparents on benches, kids on the playgrounds, joggers on the alleys. The park anchors the daily rhythm of the whole district.
The vibe
Classic, lived-in, authentic. Uniform blocks, corner shops, little squares, people who know one another by sight. Drumul Taberei has a reputation as a tight-knit community, with a sense of "home" you won't catch in the polished centre — it's the Bucharest that raised a lot of people who still feel loyal to it. There's a quiet pride here that comes from belonging rather than from spectacle.
Getting there
For a long time the district was far from the metro, one of the most populous in the city with no rail link, but that changed with the opening of the M5 line, which now connects it directly to the network — a big improvement that locals had waited on for years. See public transport for surface routes and official timetables; trams and buses still cover the gaps the metro doesn't reach. To compare it with other parts of the city, head to the neighbourhoods page, and for a casual meal the restaurants are neighbourhood spots.
