Crângași & Giulești

Crângași and Giulești form a western area set around water, mostly residential but with a few assets that lift it out of the anonymity of the tower-block districts. It's off the classic tourist route, but worth knowing, especially if water and football appeal to you. The two halves have distinct personalities — one defined by a vast lake, the other by one of Bucharest's most storied football neighbourhoods.

What to see

The star of the area is Lacul Morii, Bucharest's largest lake — about 246 hectares of water, around 7 km of shoreline, built in 1986 as a flood-control reservoir to protect the city along the Dâmbovița. It's a broad sheet of water with landscaped banks, perfect for a long walk or a bike ride away from the noise of the centre, with a peninsula on the northern side known as the "Island of Angels". A large linear park is gradually being developed around the perimeter. Alongside, Crângași park adds more greenery. Giulești is the heart of local football: the Rapid club and its stadium, a place of passionate supporters and a working-class history that means a lot to the neighbourhood.

The vibe

On one side the calm of the water and its banks, on the other the match-day energy of Giulești. It's a particular mix: lakeside ease and sporting passion, in the same corner of the city. On a clear evening the lake draws joggers, cyclists and people just watching the light over the water; on a Rapid home day, Giulești turns loud and tribal. For a meal, the restaurants lean local rather than fancy.

Getting there
