Bucharest has a reputation as a crowded city, but it is surprisingly green. Parks are not a side attraction here - they are where the city breathes. Herăstrău (Regele Mihai I)
The city's largest park, built around a long lake. This is the park for long walks, boating, running and waterside terraces. It also holds the Village Museum, an excellent cultural stop without leaving the greenery. The lakeside loop is a favourite for joggers and cyclists, and in summer the terraces fill up well into the evening. Allow a half-day if you want to do it justice.
Cișmigiu
The oldest landscaped public park in Bucharest, and the most romantic. Winding paths, a small boating lake, old plane trees and a 19th-century mood. It is the central park, perfect for a break between sights in the historic area. Look out for the chess corner, where regulars play for hours, and the seasonal flower beds that change through the year.
Carol I
A park with a monumental axis, fountains and an elegant perspective. It feels more solemn, with monuments and classical geometry. Good for quiet walks and photography, especially in the soft light of late afternoon when the symmetry of the layout really shows.
Tineretului
A large park in the south of the city, with a lake, sports areas and playgrounds. It is more of a southern neighbourhood park - practical, relaxed, uncrowded on weekdays. A solid choice if you want space to move without the centre's crowds.
Alexandru Ioan Cuza (IOR)
Known to everyone simply as "IOR", this is the vast park of the east, with a generous lake and plenty of shade. Ideal for families and for a full day outdoors, away from the centre's bustle. The mature trees make it pleasant even on hot summer days.
Botanical Garden
Not exactly a park but a scientific garden, with glasshouses, plant collections and an educational feel. Perfect for a calm visit and for anyone who loves plants. The glasshouses are a good rainy-day option; check the official schedule, since opening hours are more limited than a public park.
